Deer can really do heart breaking damage to wonderful gardening efforts!  They are attracted to the healthful vegetation that stands out from the surrounding regular meals for them. Many other wildlife animals are also attracted. During drought, everything including insects are attracted. For deer, a tight 10 foot high fence is the ultimate barrier. Very expensive and unsightly.
