QuestionI will be planting a vegetable garden in California. Everyone tells me that squirrels and gophers will be a problem. How can a protect my garden against them? I saw one of your answers was garlic. What type of garlic grows will in California Inland Empire climate?
AnswerNot sure where you read the garlic idea, but I can assure you it wasn't from me.
There are only two ways to protect your garden that are fool-proof. First, fence the garden on all sides to prevent wildlife entry or use a green house. Or 2. monitor and control populations as soon as you begin to confront damage.
You can waste a lot of valuable time and money with repellents. Our site has details on why repellents don't work as well as info on how to trap and control squirrels and pocket gophers. http://icwdm.org
If something sounds too easy in wildlife damage management, you can be pretty sure it is too good to be true. Sorry.
