crocus tops eaten

Question
I noticed the tops of my crocus bulbs have been chewed down.  I also notice
several holes approximately 1" diameter in several places in my planting area.  I
also have raised tunnels along the edge.  Last summer we flushed out a flesh
colored animal with no hair. What do you think is going on?  I live in Northern
California.  Other plants do not seem to be disturbed.  Thank you

Answer
Do you have ground squirrels? Tree squirrels will also take off the flowers of plants.

As for the animal with no hair, sounds like you flushed a pinkie, which is a newborn creature. Without more details can't identify it, but it could be a vole, ground squirrel or maybe a shrew.

Information on identifying damage can be found at http://www.icwdm.org/Inspection/Default.asp  you will see how much more information we need in order to properly diagnose.
