Question
I live in the hills above Santa Fe. Recently I have noticed about 20 holes, at the most 2 inches deep in the dry, hard, rocky ground far from the house. I have seen no critters.  Can you tell me what animals are doing this?

You didn't say how wide the holes were, what time of day they occur, how long the damage has been occurring, one night or several etc But it could be from raccoons, skunks, and other ground animals looking for grubs and other food.

Without more details or photos It would be tough for me to say more. There are images on the http://icwdm.org site in the inspection area that may help you describe the damage more completely so that we can rule out culprits.
