QuestionA couple weeks ago I was storing pumpkins and squash in my greenhouse for curing before moving into storage. Today I went to check on them and on several of the squashes was a light pile of sawdust. When I wiped it off, there was a deep hole bored into the squash. I tried cutting one open, but couldn't find the culprit. Any ideas what may be doing this?
AnswerCarpenter bees will bore holes into wood and certain vegetables leaving a trail of sawdust behind. Squash borers are also a possiblility, but they tend to bore into the stem or vine. Since you did not find the culprit, I can only speculate. But it sure sounds like carpenter bees are the prime suspect.
Have a great weekend.
