I noticed termites in my garden. How can I get rid of them and why would they be there in the first place?

They feed on wood residue. Termites look like ants but the ants have a hour glass waist where termite have a "fat waist and less distinct. Any wood produce such as mulch that contains wood can be used by termites. There are insecticides that if applied to the area will kill the termites. There are also baits that can be used. Either on will kill the termites. If you are not sure I would call a termite company and ask them to inspect the area and recommend a treatment IF you have termites.
