tomato pest

Question
Mike--We have a bunch of critters on our Roma Tomato plant(not on our other tomato plants)that are 1/2 inch long, bright red with small black dots along each side. They have soft, smooth, fat bodies. They are eating the leaves mainly.  I have been picking them off by hand and squishing them.  Do you know what these are and what to do about them.  Thank you very much!

Answer
Although spider mites, thrips, whiteflies, and aphids are the most common pests that attack tomatoes, they are also susceptible to many species of beetles. Based on your description, that would be my guess.

Regardless of which insect it is, the control methods are the same. Two great organic controls include rotenone and pyrethrum. They are derived from common plants and are completely safe for humans and pets. These can be purchased separately or in combination. Insecticidal soap is also an option, but only for less severe infestations.

All of these products can be purchased at any garden center or on-line through companies such as Gardens Alive or Planet Natural. Attached are the links to these sites, which I'm sure you'll find very beneficial.

I hope this information helps. Good luck, and please write again if I can ever provide assistance.

Regards,

Mike
