unidentified spear shaped egg or droppings

Question
I hope you can help me to identify. It is a larger than a rice spear shaped with a hard surface however when I crushed it had a grayish color substance.  If this is rat droppings why did it appear to have a hard outshell and soft substance inside. I took the specimen to an exterminator which said it was rat droppings.  My question to you is does rat dropping have an outer shell with a substance inside.  This was found on my bed and on the floor maybe about 8 specimens.   I have not seen anymore in the basement. Colonia, New Jersey...egg, dropping?

Answer
Unfortunately, without more information it would be difficult to give a definitive diagnosis.
I am not sure what you mean by a hard surface and soft inside. It is not unusual for droppings to dry from the outside in, so a dry/hard exterior with moist soft interior would not be difficult to believe for a dropping a few days old.

You didn't mention any speckles which suggests that it may not be bats. But I am concerned that you may have noticed them and just not said anything.

I suggest you visit http://icwdm.org and click on our Who DUNNIT Link and scroll down and take our inspection techniques course. It is free and it will show you how to inspect your house. Finding the entrance way for wildlife is the best way of determining whose dropping it is. On its face, however, I see no evidence based on what I have been provided that  would suggest the exterminator's diagnosis should be rejected.  So a rat is a real possibility.
