QuestionWe have a fully fenced yard in our Connecticut home to keep our two labs out of harm's way. Unfortunately, we now find that we're sharing the backyard with a fox who emerges from time to time from under our backyard shed. Not sure how the fox got into the yard, but because it's fully fenced, I don't know how to get it out. As soon as I enter the back yard when the fox is out, it dashes under the shed. Two questions:
1. Does the fox pose any danger to my dogs?
2. How can I get rid of the fox?

AnswerI seriously doubt the fox is trapped inside. Possible but if it got in, it can probably get out. Most people overestimate how large of a hole an animal needs because they forget that animals have big hair thus making them look larger than they are. A fox should be able to get though an opening around 4" in diameter. He may even be able to climb the fence depending on what it is.
As for your dogs. Unfortunately, you didn't give me a size. But foxes only weigh about 15 pounds or the size of a cat. If you have normal sized labs, it is unlikely the fox will "take on" the labs unless it is sick. More likely the labs are a threat to the fox.
As for keeping it out of the yard. That is easy. Fence the yard better. Go to http://icwdm.org for details.
As for getting rid of the fox, not sure what you want. If you want the fox killed then contact a qualified nuisance wildlife control operator. We have details on what to look for in a good one listed at our site. Buyer beware. Lots of people call themselves professionals but few are.
Don't think you will get the fox relocated. That would be illegal in your state (for good reason). So trapping it means it will ultimately be killed if the trapper follows state regulations.
If you want to control the animal yourself, follow all state laws, and the instructions on control at our web site. We have tons of free and research-based information on controlling wildlife damage.
Don't waste your time with repellents etc unless you have money you are just dying to spend. Placebos have their place but you didn't sound like you wanted them.
Search around the site. If you need more assistance, give me a call on monday. I will be in the office. My number will be on the site. Remember I am on CST.
