QuestionLast year several large branches on one of my apples just died - in full leaf. When I was pruning yesterday I noticed that the bark on the still living part of the tree can easily be peeled off. I live in zone 7, 6k' altitude, Prescott, AZ
Thanks so much,
Christi
AnswerPeeling bark is normal on trees over 10 years old. However, this condition can also be an indication of insect infestation. It is very important to protect apple trees with a regular spray program that includes a combination of a fungicide and insectide. The first application should be a dormant oil in late winter or early spring, just before the tree begins to blossom. Once the tree drops its flowers, you need to spray with the horticultural spray once every two weeks. This is very important, especially during wet periods when spores attack the tree.
I hope this answered your question. Good luck, and please write again if I can ever be of assistance.
