QuestionI know love bugs only come in may and september and i haven't seen any until about two days ago 9/22/07 i've seen about five since then.
Are they just a few random ones that came out or are they coming in october?
Do they come in october?
AnswerNicole, love bugs fly in swarms and usually number in the hundreds. They appear twice each year, first in late spring from mid-April to the end of May, and again in summer during late August and September. These swarms last 4-6 weeks in most areas and are found primarily in the southern portions of the US. They normally disappear by the first week of October.
In case you're interested, here is some more information on this slow-flying insect.
Adult females live only a few days but mate immediately after emerging from the larvae stage. Males usually die after mating and are dragged around by the female until she lays her eggs. Females lay up to 350 eggs in decaying plant matter, and it takes 3 weeks for the eggs to hatch. The larvae may live for several months before transitioning into adulthood. They do very little damage to the landscape, but are a nuisance due to their slow flight, especially for drivers.
I hope this answered your question. Please write again if I can ever be of assistance.
