munching noises

Question
All the time when i walk by our old pine tree i hear a munching sound and there are holes in the tree. Saw dust is falling non stop. What could it be?

Answer
These are insects called pine sawyer. They bore under the bark and into the wood and besides the sound produce boring dust and very small wood chips. They infest a tree generally after it is either dying or dead. Are the needles on the pine turning brown from the green color and/or the needles dropping numbers of green and brown needles? These are signs that the the is dying or is dead. Once a pine has its needles turn brown it will not re-foliate like a hardwood tree may. Sounds like the pine is on its way out. There are numerous things that could have caused this such as--drought, weed and feed fertilizer/herbicide combo used, bark beetles attacking the tree and the sawyers coming in after them (bark beetles usually leave many wads of pitch on the bark where the beetle has entered).
