QuestionWould chili powder sprinkled in the hole in my lawn get rid of it? I am in northwest Iowa. There are 2 holes about 36 inches apart. I have tried gas fuses that you lite, yet no results. Its back. I would try anything.
AnswerI am glad you asked me first before you tried everything. First, repellents are rarely as effective as homeowners wish they were. The reasons for this are explained at http://icwdm.org/Prevention/repellents.asp
For repellents to use on particular species including home remedies, visit http://icwdm.org/handbook/index.asp Click the species you wish to protect yourself against. Remember, always follow label directions when using repellents. Understand however, for many species there are no effective repellents, despite what you may read.
The handbook link will have techniques able to control your rodents. You didn't mention what kind of ground squirrel. I suspect you are referring to thirteen lined ground squirrel rather than chipmunk. The problem with gas as you discovered, is they don't work well if the animal isn't in the hole and/or the soil is too porous so the gas doesn't reach toxic levels. With only two holes, you should think of trapping. Again the links contain the info.
