Red Bugs in Lawn

Question
Hi Mike,
I'm hoping you can help me. I live in Mass and I was outside today playing with my son. I had put down a blanket and we went and played some ball. By the time I got back, there were these tiny tiny red bugs all over the blanket. I shook it off an not even 5 mins later, they were back! What are these things and how do I make them go away? And are they harmful in anyway?
I appreciate your help.

Answer
Amy, although it is difficult to identify an insect without seeing it, the only red insect that infests lawns is the chinch bug, otherwise referred to as the red nymph bug. These insects eventually develop wings and leave the area. However, they may nest in the lawn where future generations can breed.

They are not harmful and usually disappear by summer. I would not worry about them. But if you would like to try an inexpensive control, mix three teaspoons of lemon liquid dish soap to one gallon of water and put the mixture in a garden sprayer. Spray liberally over the entire lawn. The soap will destroy the digestive systems of the bugs and result in their demise. An added benefit to using this solution is that the liquid soap breaks down thatch in the lawn, allowing for better penetration of water and fertilizers.

I hope this answered your question. Please write again if I can ever be of assistance.

Regards,

Mike
