QuestionHi Dan,
I hope you can help me, because I am at the end of my rope.
A year ago, we purchased 2 acres in the country ONLY because we have show dogs and also a rescue (we save dogs who would otherwise be euthanised). In the last few months we have several "wild" cats who are invading the wooded portion of my property behind my kennels. I would not mind sharing my property with them, however they are now getting bold enough to come near the kennels almost every evening and driving my dogs CRAZY. I have a neighbor who, allthough is far enough away, is complaining.
I have tried repellents, automatic lighting, and most recently sit in my kitchen waiting for them to come around (which is usually around 10:00 p.m., give or take) so I can go out and spray behind the kennels with the garden hose. This worked for a while, now I guess the water is losing it's effectiveness. It is not an option to fence, that won't work because of the layout of the property.
I would LOVE to trap them to get them the heck out of here, however local shelters will not accept them, because they are not adoptable. I have found one rescue that will help, however they need the fees to spay/neuter them. This is crazy! they are not my responsibility, financially or otherwise!
I know this is a last resort, but do you have any ideas that may help me? The "cats & dogs" are making my life hell!
Thank you,
Lore
AnswerHi,
My expertise is with native wildlife. Domestic animals have different instincts and are largely unreactive to native predator clues... which is what I utilize. If I think of something I'll post back, but I have nothing definite to help immediately. Do you have any idea why these feral cats are coming around? Removing the attraction would help. I've seen motion sensing sprinklers I think called scarecrows or such that might replace your personal involvement. They are touted as deer repellents but any animal would set them off.
