QuestionHi. I have a bunch of mole tunnels and know enough to know where there are moles there are grubs. So my question is after I treat the soil with milky spore how long until the moles head elsewhere?
Thanks for any info.
Answerit depends on your soil make-up, weather conditions, and numerous other factors. on the label it should give you a rough idea how long it takes for milky spore to establish themselves. in cold weather areas 3-5 years and in warm areas 1-3 years. it needs to be applied while the grubs are actively feeding in your area. get to your local garden center/nursery and see when they recommend treating the lawns in your area.
an added thought...
the best way to get rid of moles during any season is to get(hire, rent, buy, etc.) a good cat. cats will rid your area of moles, voles, mice, and other unwanted varmints. they will even show you how their work is progressing by bringing the heads and/or bodies to a place(garage, porch, etc.) where you can view them. they hunt best at night. my cat even gets rid of crickets and other bugs. i have a tuxedo cat, named slick. he's been declawed(my daughter had leukemia and the only way we could have a cat was if it was declawed). he's an indoor cat. he keeps himself clean and smells good all the time. he's an excellent addition to our family(and this from a former cat non-lover----me). cats definitely earn their keep. as long as you give them plenty of food in a bowl and a litter box you can leave them in a garage for weeks at a time and they will take care of themselves. when we travel i have a friend change the litter box(every week) and renew their food supply.
i'm in southern NJ. from a landscaper's point of view you have to treat a mole infestation by treating your lawn area while the insects grubs are actively feeding on the roots of your grass. in NJ this is in late spring(june/july) and again in late summer(aug/sept). i like scott lawn products(grubacide w/fertilizer). follow the labeled instructions for good results. use the proper equipment when making the application. and make sure you do it at the right time.
keep the cat out of the area until it's had a rain or good watering.
of course what you decide is your choice.
good luck
