QuestionHello,
I have a problem with an insect called Spittlebug. It has attaked two perrenials and I cannot find an insecticide that will kill it. I live in Montreal Canada and was very surprised to find this type of bug on my plants. Would appreciate your help.
P.S. I tried to hose them off but cannot put too much pressure because the stems are very thin.
I pick them off by hand but they keep on comming.

AnswerEd, Sevin is the most popular pesticide on the market, but it is a very harsh chemical. It is highly effective on shrubs and flowers, but I would not recommend spraying it near vegetables or anywhere pets or kids may frequent. If you want to stay away from chemicals, you can spray with horticultural oil. This is considered an organic product and will not only kill the aphids but their eggs as well.
Two other organic alternatives are pyrethrin and rotenone. These insecticides are actually derivatives of other plants that kill insects on contact. They can be purchased on-line through organic companies such as Gardens Alive or at your local garden center. Attached is a link to these products.

Given the fact that the products I mentioned above are non-toxic to humans and pets, they are your safest alternative.
One other highly effective solution is insecticidal soap. I use it myself along with ammonia. Simply mix one tablespoon of regular dishwashing soap and one tablespoon of lemon ammonia to one gallon of water. Spray it liberally on your plants. It destroys the digestive tracts of the insects and kills them within a few hours of ingestion.
I hope this helps. Good luck, and please write again if I can ever be of assistance.
Regards,
Mike
