AnswerThe best control is the use of an insecticide to spray the foliage and kill the aphids. There is a system that is used that injects the insecticide into the bark and the tree takes the insecticide up into the leaves. The spraying of a large tree will take a pressure sprayer but on a smaller tree can be done by a homeowner. The injection will take a professional. I would suggest you contact the St. Louis Urban (city) Forester and ask his advice on local controls and he should be able to give you some names of applicators. The phone number I have is 952/924-2565 and the name is Jim Vaughan. I do not know if he is still with St. Louis but the city should know.
