QuestionI have chipmuncks in my house and garden. How can I get rid of them. They are destorying things in and outside. and I do have dogs too. Is there away to get rid of them for good.
AnswerThe solution is to trap him and euthanize them if such action is legal in your state. Relocation is probably cruel see http://www.wildlifedamagecontrol.com/relocation.htm and possibly illegal in your state. You know they are all gone from the hole they are using by corking the hole with newspaper and see if it moves after several days. Remember, in the winter time, especially during cold weather, chipmunks can den up for weeks (that is why they store all that food) so it is a judgement call during the cold months. I would think during warmer periods summer, waiting to see if the paper doesn't move for 7 days would be appropriate (but no guarantee).
Don't bother with repellents, mothballs, coyote urine, ultrasonics etc. These products have limited effectiveness if they work at all. Visit http://www.wildlifedamagecontrol.com/ultrasound.htm or http://www.wildlifedamagecontrol.com/repellents.htm to learn more. There is NOTHING that will prevent chipmunks from entering your yard short of the wildlife equivalent of the Berlin Wall. Don't use poison either as many states forbid the poisoning of wildlife and chipmunks have a tendency to HOARD poison as opposed to eating it right away. So if you poison, the chipmunk will pile it up somewhere and not eat it till the winter, if he eats it at all. Now you have this pile of poison lying out there for some other animal or person to consume. Cats are not a good solution because of how they ravage song birds and other animals. Sorry there is no magic in this business. Trapping is very effective as is modification of habitat. NO food no chipmunks. People say, well I trapped them and they came back. My question is, why mow grass, you just have to mow it again? The reason why you get more chipmunks is because chipmunks reproduce and chipmunks from surrounding property will fill the void on your property created by your trapping. So aggressive trapping will bring you relief. But there is no magic. It is just work and time. The way to make trapping more efficient is to get more traps. To learn how to trap them visit http://www.wildlifedamagecontrol.com/chipmunkbooklet.htm Always follow the laws of your state.
Understand you have chipmunks because of the food availability and proper habitat. I would strongly suggest you read my page on chipmunks and my article feed birds not squirrels. You can find these pages at http://www.wildlifedamagecontrol.com/solutions.htm
