QuestionI recently bought a heliconia (Lady Di) and separated it into two pots. I didn't realize the potting soil already had fertilizer so I added more. A couple days later, I realized and repotted them in potting soil only. I live in Hawaii and they have been in full sun. The leaves are curling and turning yellow. I have found so much contradicting information about the problem being too much water, not enough water, some type of disease or deficiency. So what do you think the problem is and what exactly should I do? This is my first attempt at gardening and any help, advice, suggestions would be appreciated. Thanks
AnswerHi Candice. First, never add fertilizer to a newly planted plant you want the roots to grow. I say usually wait a month before adding a GOOD fertilizer, a slow release and check for salt and chlorine in the package and do not buy if it is in there. Fertilizer makes the upper part grow and you want the lower to take hold. Heliconias like water in the summer and dry in the winter or the bulbs will mush. The leaves are curling and turning yellow as you just divided them and they are unhappy. kathy
