QuestionWe have a weeping willow that is approx. 4 years old (in northern MN). This year it has a massive bark separation approx. 4 inches wide and mostly the length of the trunk (approx 4 feet). It is also starting where one of the main branches separates off. There appear to be some black & red ants traveling the course, but not seeing any other termites or bugs. Any ideas how to stop this?
AnswerBecky:
This separation may be due to a cold injury event. The ants are taking advantage of this probably. They are often not the cause, but the result. I wish there was a magic bullet, but unfortunately not and the tree may ultimately succumb.
