Questionplanted 15' EPH 3/26 Ocala,FL area, watered (drip)each day for 20 min. for 30 days. Alternate days now. Leaves (maybe 40-50) from top to bottom turning yellow with some brownish coloration. Most foliage is still green. Do I have a problem? Have not fertilized yet. told to use 6-6-6. Any suggestions? Thank you.

AnswerDear Dave, One important note about evergreens; since they don't lose their leaves all at once, it is common for them to lose some leaves continuously. That being said, I suspect that you aren't watering these trees enough. This species of holly can actually stand soil on the damp side. Twenty minutes of drip irrigation is fine for shrubs, but a tree can be watered less often but much more deeply. Usually I take a hose and let it run at a medium stream for perhaps an hour. It depends on how dry your soil is and how big the tree is, but I would water it until the ground started to become soggy, then I would stop and water again in perhaps three or four days for a newly planted tree. After a few years, they should be able to survive without extra watering except in drought emergencies. So water more deeply and less often and your trees should be fine. Good luck, Melissa
