White lumps on grapevine?

Question
I have recently noticed many pea-sized white lumps on the branch of my grapevine. They appear to be foamy or cotton wool like. They also have a black sort of crust covering part of them. I as wondering if you knew what this could be and whether it is going to affect my grapevine? Thanks.

Answer
Hi Tasha:
These "bumps" may be a type of insect such as an aphid or scale insect. You are welcome to send me a photo. I have a "bug" expert next to my office and I can show him the image.  To take the shot, get as close as you can to the twig with bumps.  Take several shots. Using your computer, pick the best and be sure it is in focus by viewing on your computer first and before you send.  An out focus image is not too useful to me.  If you do not have a digital camera, you can snip off a twig and carry it to your local garden center/nursery to get an ID.  Once you get an accurate ID, then you can get an appropriate chemical if needed.  If you wish not to get an ID at this time, you can just prune out the affected twig if you just have one or two.  Be sure to keep an eye out for any new bumps that may develope.

Regards
Steve
