Question
This season many of the buds on the lower branches of my oak tree are spliiting off about an inch from the buds. We had an unussual cold spell after a warm spell and the buds were already out when the cold spell hit.

Sounds like a reaction form the cold. As long as the tree is putting out new growth it will be fine. You may lose a little growth but the over all health of the tree should not be effected. Hardwood trees have the capability to leaf pout again IF the first buds are damaged.
