QuestionQUESTION: i have an outdoor palmplant. its leaves are turning all brown, with white spots on the leaves, some of spots are black. it is not cottony, or raised. plant is quickly dying.please help
ANSWER: Jennifer:
If the leaves are browning over most of the plant and have occurred fairly rapidly, then I expect some type of root stress that has developed. Many things can cause this. I am not sure if the white spots are the cause. If you can, take a closeup photo and send to me. Try to get as clasoe as you can and be sure your image is in focus by reviewing it on your computer screen before you send. These white spots may be a type of scale or other insect. In the meantime, check the trunk for signs of bark or other physical injury. This may be an issue also.
If the plant is an potted interior plant that has recently been put outside, then a cold temperature event may have caused an injury as well.

QUESTION: You respnded to my question, asking for a picture of my plant. this is a picture of one leaf.
AnswerJennifer:
Thanks for your photo! I do not recognize any type of insect nor disease organism from your image. If most of the leaves are looking like this, I would be suspicious of a root and/or soil related issue. Without seeing the plant in person, it is difficult to get a clear picture. You may consider contacting your local County Extension office or your local nursery/garden center to see about arrange for a "house call". A knowledgeable person may be able to get a better idea. If you have trouble locating your Extension office, I can get you a phone number to call if you can tell me the state and county you reside in.
