Question
plant id
Hi,
May I know the name of this succulent plant I've grown for close to a year? The flowers resemble yellow daisies. How to get it flower? Is it suffering from overcrowding, hence the stagnation in flower development?
AnswerDear Alfredo, Yes, this is a plant I really like and it's called ice plant. There are several different ones with different colored flowers, but I think the yellow ones are best. It should flower in the summer months, but I'm not sure how that would translate so near the equator. I'm not sure if this will help it bloom, but here's an observation of mine from when I used to sell these in a greenhouse for a company. They were very popular as hanging baskets, and those would flower a great deal and for a long time. We also had some for sale in pots and I'm not sure I ever saw them bloom. It might be worth a try to put it in a hanging basket, it would help keep the temperature around the pot cooler and that might do it. They have these growing in California along the highway medians and they're just gorgeous. You might give it a light feeding of super bloom to see if that helps. Other than that, the only other trick I can think of is leaving a cut apple nearby. Sometimes the chemicals released by the apple will get stubborn plants to bloom like bromeliads and aloe vera I believe. Anyway, good luck, and let me know what works. Melissa
