QuestionI have an Everblooming Lilac bush I brought inside for the winter. I no sooner brought it in and found it starting an infestation of fine cobwebs on the leaves and branches.
Where these webs go the the leaves wither and die.
I had thought perhaps these are Spider Mites? as they have killed houseplants on me before. Mainly Miniature Roses.
Please, how do I save my Lilac?
Thank you.
AnswerHi Tracey:
It will be best to get a positive ID in order to select and use the best method of control.
Spider mites do indeed make a web, usually very delicate and in the "crotch" area where the leaves are connected to the stem/twig. They are quite small and difficult to see. One easy way to see them is to hold a piece of white paper under some leaves with the webs on them and using your hand, tap those leaves over the sheet of paper. Look for them crawling on the paper. Try this on several locations. They are about the size of a pin point and are orange/red in color. The white paper background makes them easier to see.
If you are not lucky at this procedure, snip off a twig with webs and wilted leaves and carry to your local garden center/nursery. Best to use a reputable nursery that has been in business for a long time. Try to avoid the "big box stores" and focus on just a nursery in your community. They should be able to recognize the culprit and recommend a control.
