spots on leaves of dwarf pear tree

Question
i have a dwarf pear tree in my yard and for 2 years now the leaves develop spots on them, they look dark brown maybe black. how can i control this and what is it.  i live in queens new york city

Answer
Anthony:
Thanks for your question. The truth is that many microorganisms can cause leaf spots. Sometimes spots can even be caused by an injury, like injury sustained from an accidental spraying of something, not a bona-fide infectious disease.

A couple of questions for you. (1) do the spots get worse or do they appear suddenly and do not grow more numerous or larger in size? (2) Are the spots all over the tree or are they confined to one side or one portion of the tree.  (3) Do the spots seem to cause the leaves to drop any early than normal?
(4) How large are the spots in diameter?

It may be helpful to also send me a closeup photo of a leaf with spots on it.  Try to get as close as you can and still keep the spots in focus.  Be sure to review your image on your computer first- to be sure it is crisp and in focus before you send it.

Regards
Steve
