QuestionThank you for taking the time to help me. I have just moved
into this house that has some very old grape vines growing.
The leaves all have what seem to be bumps on them. It has
affected the whole vine. There turning a little yellow, but I
attribute that to fall.. Any Ideas? Thank you.
AnswerHi Nanette:
Based on your description, these "bumps" may be a type of insect structure. The insect may be a type of phylloxera. Using your computer, look for images in "Google Images" and see if those match your bumps. You can cut through one of these bumps and see if it is somewhat hollow and may contain an egg w/in. My knowledge of this insect is quite limited, however, you can contact your local garden center/nursery for more. Other types of phylloxera occur on pecans and cottonwood leaves. Good sanitation (removing/raking up fallen affected leaves and destroying them) can help reduce the problem for the next season since these insects survive the winter on those fallen leaves with bumps on them.
If I am way off base on my guess, you are welcome to send me a closeup photo of a leaf with these bumps on it. Review your image on your computer to be sure it is in focus and crisp before you send it.
Thanks
Have a great day!
