QuestionI have several Vanderwolf Pine planted 6 months ago average 7-10' tall. All are doing well except one. New growth immediately turns brown with whitish powder type substance (or growth actually comes out as described?). Any ideas?
AnswerDavid:
If this whitish substance looks like a crusty/powdery material that appears to look like a resin that exudes from the tip area, this may be a "bleeding" of plant sap that is in response to a wound to the twig. Often, but not always, this wound is caused by an insect. You may try pruning out the affected area back down into the green potion- say maybe 6" below the area where the brown and green tissues meet. Dispose of the pruned tips. If it is a disease or an insect, pruning it out of the tree may remove it completely. Keep an eye out for anything that may show up on the other pines.
