QuestionHello Dr. Vann,
I have a dwarf orange tree. The canopy has been dying back for the last few years and in the last year the bark on the trunk and branches has been splitting in large pieces. Is it more likely a disease or is the tree reaching the end of its life cycle? Thank you very much.
AnswerHi Sandra:
Based on your description, I suspect that there may be some level of internal decay. This is a progressive condition that can be caused by several bacterial and fungal microorganisms. As decay progresses, thinning of the branches occurs, insects move in, and then ultimate tree failure. Replacement then may become an option.
