QuestionI have an ornamental Plum tree that has developed numerous areas of gelatinous globs that drip onto the ground from the branches. Almost 2/3 of the tree branches are affected. The leaves are still looking good and this spring it produced large quantities of small plums.I have photos but at present can't attach them.
AnswerWilma:
These "globs" are probably plant sap that oozes from the tree. It looks like a clear to amber colored resinous material that gets firm to the touch. This process is a self defense mechanism when the tree is wounded some how. Often it may be an insect puncture. The area beneath this ooze would need to be examine to get a better idea as to the nature of the wound. If it is an insect, check in with your local garden center for a potential insecticide that can be used.
