QuestionQUESTION: Hi I own 41 ac in Town of Dakota, Waushara Cnty, WU and recently went up to visit my land. Many of the oak trees had what appeared to be a white substance starting at center of leaf and going out. Others had whitish spots. What am I dealing with.
ANSWER: Hi Judy:
Not sure w/o seeing some leaves. Can you take and send me a closeup photo of a couple of these affected leaves. Review your image on your computer first- to be sure it is in focus before sending.
As far as bona fide diseases go that I am familiar with, possible Powdery Mildew (PM). This looks like white "fuzzy" patches or blotches on the leaves. It is usually a cosmetic issue. This fungus lays flat on the leaf and grows mostly superficially. It occurs in a random pattern, not always starting from the center. Usually, no big deal if the trees are in good health otherwise. PM can attack lots of different trees and ornamentals. You can look under "Google Images" on your computer for some pictures of PM that you can use to compare. This "stuff" may be some type of insect or residue. It would be best for me to see an image to have a better idea. You can also collect some leaves and carry to your local nursery to get an ID. Do these spots seem to be causing any other issues with the leaves other than just appearance at this point?

Steve

QUESTION: I have pictures, but the site isn't very "user friendly" as regards how to input pictures. judy (by the way it's WI, not WU :) Oops, there it is! I have more pics, but it won't allow me to add more....
ANSWER: Judy:
Got your photo. This may be powdery mildew, especially if it looks "fuzzy", like little white strands that fan out. Difficult to say since the image is a bit out of focus. As I mentioned, try looking at some different pictures on "Google" to try a matchup.
I think this web site only allows one image attachment per message.
And thanks for letting me know it was WI instead of WU. I did check mapquest to find that area. The tree does look like a white oak.
P.S. If you have a good/in focus photo, I can give you my personal email address for you to send one or more images at a time. Just let me know if you want to try that.

QUESTION: Yes, I'd like to send you the other pics I have of the Oak leaves. Judy

Again, be sure to review your images on your computer first- to be sure they are crisp and in focus before you attach and send. Since we don't have to worry so much about film any more, take a few and select the best 2 or 3. Try to get as close as you can to your subject and still have an in focus image. Use subject line "Oak Leaf photos".
