Question
White Scale
I noticed this morning that there is a white-looking scale on both of my crepe myrtles. I can't tell if it is infested with scale insects or some kind of other type of scale. I've looked up scale insects but none look like what I'm seeing. These are tiny white oval shaped items. They are all up the trunks and some are located in the new leaf shoots.
AnswerTerry:
There are many types of scale insects. People refer to them as having scale or having scale insects on their plants. Once the babies find a nice spot to feed, they settle in and don't move around much at all for the rest of their life..
Check out an insecticide called BAYER ADVANCED GARDEN- TREE AND SHRUB INSECT CONTROL. It contains Imidacloprid, the active ingredient. The product is mixed with water (read label completely) and can be applied to the soil. the plant takes it up through the roots.
Keep in mind that when the individual scale insects die, they do not usually fall off the plant, so you will need to keep an eye out for any new individuals appearing after you apply insecticide to know if it is working.
