river birch tree

Question
QUESTION: My young river birch tree started to get bright pink - red patches on some of the leaves. It feels almost like velvet. It has been spreading. At first it looked pretty, but now I an concerned for the health of the tree.

ANSWER: Hi Jane:
These patches may be an insect structure, but I am not sure without seeing them. Can you take and send along a photo? Try to get as close as you are comfortable with to make the shot. Be sure to review the image on your computer before you send- to be sure it is in focus.  If you are not a good photographer as I am, then you can always collect a few affected leaves and carry them by your local garden center/nursery. A lot of times these folks may have seen this before and know what they are looking at.
Best to get an accurate identification to determine if it poses any health issues or not. There are a lot of insects out there that have only a minimal impact on the overall health of an established tree or shrub.

QUESTION: Steve,

Attached is a picture. Hopefully it comes through clear.

Thanks,

Answer
Jane:
These are the evidence of a type of mite damage, probably a type of eriophyid mite. These should not have a significant impact on the overall health of an established tree. There are plenty of predator insects that help control these critters. Since some may overwinter on fallen leaves, be sure to rake up fallen leaves before the spring.
P.S. Good picture!

Steve
