QuestionOur Carrotwood has developed a white powder on many of it's leaves. Is this going to be harmful to the tree? I thought Carrotwoods were disease resistant.
AnswerHi Karen:
The white powder MAY be a fungus disease called Powdery Mildew. For the most part, it is a "cosmetic" issue that usually does not compromise the overall health of a tree if it is well established in the landscape and is being fertilized and watered appropriately. Homeowners usually do not spray for this disease UNLESS they want a specimen tree- one that is close to perfection. In other words, they usually can live with the problem. Using Google Images on your computer, take a look at pictures of powdery mildew to compare with your tree.
The white powder MAY also be an insect, particularly if the powder is more in clumps rather than a uniform covering or patches.
If you wish , you can send me a closeup photo of an affected leaf and I can offer you my $0.02 opinion. Try to get as close as you can to the leaf. Review your image on your computer BEFORE you send -to be sure it is in focus and crisp.
This is an attractive tree. It is my understanding that it may be considered an invasive species in some locales. Several years ago, I use to sell it at a nursery in Florida.
