Question
diseased Acer
I have a mature, established Acer which has been experiencing dieback for the last two years. Several branches have had to be cut off completely and now the bark is peeling away at the bottom. It also has some tiny white spots on the trunk that appear to be an insect infestation of some kind. It is a lovely tree but I fear that if the dieback continues we may lose it completely. What is its problem and what, if anything, can I do about it?
AnswerAnna:
If you are experiencing dieback with loose bark, this may indicate some level of internal decay which is a progressive situation. Unfortunately, there is no control other than good fertilization and appropriate water to keep the tree in as best shape as possible. Ultimatly, the tree will probably need to be removed.
