cut leaf golden elder

Question
QUESTION: I have a cut leaf golden elder that has clusters of black eggs in the branch junctions.  These eggs appear to be attracting ants.  Can these be a type of Aphid egg?  Any ideas of what they may be and what I could do to rid the tree of them?

Thank you

Susan

ANSWER: Hi Susan:
Great to hear from someone in Canada! In order to give you an accurate answer and some management options, it would be useful to see what these eggs look like. Can you take a closeup photo of this cluster and send to me?  Try to get as close as you dare to to take the shot. Be sure to review it on your computer first- to be sure it is in focus before sending.  I have a "bug person" next door to me and I can share your photo.  Do you see any damage to the plant that looks like it may be an insect?

Regards
Steve

QUESTION: Steve
Sorry for the delay in replying I was on a business trip when I sent the question.  I've attached a picture which shows the eggs, bugs and ants.  I suspect that I am dealing with aphids but would appreciate a confirmation.  In the past I have washed everything down with soapy water is this what you would suggest?

Answer
Susan:
You need to go to work for National Geographic!! Your photo was beautiful.  These are aphids. They come in a variety of colors. Give birth to live babies and make their living by sucking plant juices. The ants sometimes "farm" aphids, so the ants aren't hurting anything- just tending to the herd.

Several insecticides available for aphids.  They tend to prefer tender portions of the plants.
Thanks Again!!
Steve
