Question
White Crabapple
My Crabapple has been dropping leaves, I planted this tree four years ago and have not seen any problems in the past. The leaves are turning yellow prior to falling, there is still a large amount of leaves on the tree, and we have had a large amount of rain this spring. The only unusual thing I see is my Hostas under the tree have some very small holes in their leaves, some other Hostas that are growing 10 to 15 feet away don't!
AnswerBruce:
Difficult to say what may be causing leaf drop. Sometimes if there is a rather sudden/unexpected drop in temperature during the early spring this can injury tender tissues and may cause drop. Doesn't sound like an insect /disease so I'd just keep an eye on it. Be sure to check for any loose bark near the base of the tree to be sure it doesn't get damages. Holes in the Hostas- probably a few slugs- they are notorious for this. Here, it is the deer that literally have hosta salad overnight!!!
