Schefflera tree

Question
QUESTION: Hi Stephen,
I've got an indoor schefflera tree that seems to be getting very sticky gooey leaves (and the floor around it is sticky as well.)  What is happening?  Is this a fungus or insect?  How do I treat it?
Thanks for your time.
Stan

ANSWER: Stan:
This "sticky" stuff sounds like honeydew. A product of an insect that is feeding on this plant or from a plant that might be overhead. The insect, usually aphids or scales are eating more plant juices than they can digest, so it squirts out their rear end and drips below. The solution- control the insect.  Several insecticides available. One option is an insecticidal soap. This is a spray that can be used on lots of different plants.  Contact your local nursery/garden center for specifics. Another option is a product that when mixed w/water can be applied to the soil. It is taken up by the roots and can last a long time. It is called BAYER ADVANCED GARDEN TREE AND SHRUB INSECT CONTROL.  It contains imidachloropid which is a good material- but expensive. The insecticidal soap comes as a ready to use spray.  Be sure to follow directions for these products.  If you spray your houseplants, best to carry them outside so as not to get the sprays on your furniture etc.

Steve

QUESTION: Thanks for your help!  Much appreciated!

Answer
Stan:
You are welcome. Be sure to check on the under surface of the leaves for these insects. They are good at hiding. Best to get a positive ID on the critter first. If there is any question as to the correct ID, you can carry a few of these leaves with the critter to your local nursery or garden center to get them to look at and prescribe an appropriate insecticide.
