QuestionMy flowering plum blossomed as usual this April. Now I have noticed that there are not many leaves and the ones that are there are not purple but green and limp. The bark looks fine. My 2 other plums look great.
Thank you.
AnswerSounds almost normal. The leaves sprout after the bloom fades away from the trees. With the approach of summer time, the leaves of the flowering plum tree will change color from glossy green to deep, bright burgundy. They do not like much water so if the soil is wet the leaves will wilt as if they are under a drought. Check the soil around the tree and if it is dry water. Place a pan under the tree and turn the sprinkler on and when the pan has 1 inch in it stop--trees need about 1 inch of water per week.
There are several diseases that could cause problems but I do not have enough information to ID these.
