QuestionHello,
I have a poplar tree my grandfather planted about 50 years ago that appears to be on its way out. It started 3 years ago when I noticed one half of one of its branches was dead. I thought it might come out of it but the next year that whole branch was dead and half of another had started to go. This year half of the entire tree is gone. Its got me puzzled because its always been a good tree. It stands about 60 feet tall and the trunk is about 3 feet across. We haven't done anything new around here or messed with the yard or anything. It sits between two other trees but i don't know what they are. Its about 15 feet from the road and a small irrigation ditch runs between the road and the tree. We are located in the southern Idaho area in a primarily agriculture community. Any ideas or help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.. D. P.S. ( it seems to be dieing from the top of the branch down?)
AnswerD:
This tree may have some level of internal decay, a slow yet progressive decline. This decay can be caused by a variety of fungal and/or bacterial microorganisms that enter the tree most often through a wound in the bark on the trunk or roots. The decay process can take years! Unfortunately, no magic bullet. Preventing wounds is the best management practice. Over time, it may become a hazard to persons or property. At that time, it may need to be made into firewood. Good fertilization and water, especially during hot/dry periods may help sustain it for some period.
