QuestionI have some young peach trees and this is the first time that they are baring fruit. The peaches are the size of a quarter and already have little holes in them with a clear sticky substance coming out of the holes. Some of the leaves have holes and look like something is eating at the leaves.
AnswerHi Mary:
The sticky exudate from the holes is material from the immature fruit. It is a response to injury- from your description, an insect borer that has tunneled inside the fruit. Not too much you can do once they get inside. There are some insecticides that you can spray periodically on the tree to prevent these little critters from getting inside. Contact your local garden center about getting such that you can spray the tree with.
