QuestionJust planted several Emerald Green Arborvitae which I boutht from Lowe's in my home state of Arkansas. Planted in my back yard. Found a fairly large "cut" in trunk of one of the trees and several small patches of brown on some of the green branches. I am more worried about the cut trunk since I've heard this can definitely kill the tree. Is there anything I can do about it?
AnswerRenee:
Depending on the severity of the cut, this could spell trouble down the road. An open area provides an opportunity for insects and disease organisms to get inside the tree. Unfortunately, I am not aware of a fix. Prevention is the best approach. If the cut was already on the tree when you bought it, you may consider pursuing a replacement if you have any paperwork on the tree. Starting out with a healthy tree that is free of defects. The pruning paints are apparently useless for wounds- some I have heard cause more damage than help out.
