QuestionHello, we have well watered and fed (acidic fertilizer for evergreens) Yew shrubs that are planted near our concrete foundation. The have had a healthy 6 year life in our home near Chicago. This Spring, it appears that the bark has been removed from the branches causing the needles to turn brown. We don't see specific evidence of rabbits or other animal teeth marks. Can they be saved or can we prevent this in the future with new plants?
Thank you
AnswerChris:
If the bark has been removed around a stem, this may be a terminal situation for the particular stem, since it cuts off the flow of water/nutrients from the leaves to the roots. Several animals, including man (with a string trimmer or lawnmower!!) can damage the bark, often fatal over time.
P.S. I made my first trip to Chicago a week ago. It was a trip with my wife who had a business meeting. We stayed at the Hilton Chicago on S. Michigan Ave. Very nice city!!

Steve
