QuestionI have two fruitless mulberry trees the same age. I planted them 3 years ago at the same time. Last year both of the trees developed yellow leaves and then most of the leaves fell off. This year as they are budding, one is beautiful and full and the other has small, pale leaves, and not very many of them. They seem to have brown edges. That is the same thing that happened last year. I water them both the same. I've looked all over the internet and it doesn't seem to match the description of the spot fungi. I live in the Colorado River Valley just north of Needles. 500 ft. elevation. Can you help me save this tree? I am thinking that I need to apply a fungicide. Please help.
Thank you.
AnswerSheila:
Sounds like one of these trees is struggling a bit. Yellow leaves, brown edges and leaf drop are evidences of stress, possibly from the roots or soil rather than a bona fide infectious disease. Take a look at the base of the trees for evidences of bark damage or loose bark. If there is damage, this may account for the problem. Also be sure to not overwater. Does the soil hold water a lot- lots of clay in the soil? If you like, you can send me a picture of the tree, especially if you see any problems at the base of the trunk as described above. Be sure to review your image on your computer first- to be sure it is in focus before sending.
