Termites and carpenter ants do not typically invade living wood, so if they are present, there is another reason they are there. There may be some decayed wood that these insects are using as a home.
Look closely at the trunk (especially near the soil) and larger branches for any evidence of holes or cavities in the bark where these insects are present. Loose or peeling bark is usually an indicator. If there is dead or decayed wood within the tree, this is usually a slow but progressive situation in which the tree may eventually succumb. Replacement may be the only option. The decline is usually recognized by fewer and fewer number of leaves present each year. Wounds created by lawnmowers, string trimmers, and other machinery are often a death sentence. They create areas where insects and diseases can enter the tree and initiate terminal problems.
