Question
Baby Avocado Tree
Hi,
I am growing an avocado tree inside in a pot in a partially sunny window in Maine. I started the avocado from a pit and it is doing well at about 6 months old and about 9 inches tall. I started the pit in water and the leaves grew and it looked great. I transplanted the avocado into soil and one of the leaves turned brown and dropped off (this was about 2 months ago). Since then two large leaves have grown. Recently the top began to grow up and 4 new leaves are growing out, but the two old leaves are starting to get very brown. I am worried that the cycle of new leaves followed by the bottom leaves turning brown and falling off will continue. Ideas?
Thanks,
Sarah
AnswerHi Sarah, If you were to keep your avocado in a pot for too long it will run a root around the pot and stop growing and never fruit. Growing an avocado from a seed would take approximately 12 years to fruit in the ground. In the ground a avocado can get to about 40 ft., but can not take the cold where you are. Avocado plants are kind of tricky, they like a drink but do not want to be too wet. Fertilizer can also burn leaves if you use the wrong kind. If you keep it in a pot with a basin on the bottom after 15 minutes you need to empty the water out or it will root rot it. kathy
