Question
Maple
My mature maple tree has white spots that just showed up this winter in the Chicago, IL area. They are basically 1-5 inches and only on the lower half of the branches, not the trunk or upper part of the tree.
They almost look like paint. There is no texture that would seem like lichen. They are definitely white and have not other undertones.
AnswerHi Cindi:
Thanks for your question. These white spots are a superficial fungus or algae, probably cosmopolitan, that is growing on the dead outer bark and laying flat. I would not be concerned about these being a issue. Just be sure you keep the tree watered appropriately during the upcoming summer months and more importantly, avoid wounds to the trunk and roots, these are great ways that the "bad" organisms like bacteria and fungal microorganisms get in and start decay.
I noticed that you were from Chicago. I am planning to make my 1st trip to the city next month on the 8th with my family. Looking forward to seeing the aquarium.
