QuestionOur sago was infested with white scale, despite trying to treat the problem last season. My husband cut back all of the fronds last November. Will new fronds come back? Do we need to do something now to ensure that the scale problem does not recur?
AnswerHi Helen:
New fronds should form if the plant is happy where it is. The scale insects may need periodic monitoring. Consider looking at an insecticide that you can apply to the soil that lasts for several months. Take a look at: BAYER ADVANCED GARDEN TREE AND SHRUB INSECTICIDE, it contains the active ingredient Imidachloropid. It comes in a blue plastic bottle. You mix this liquid w/water according to the directions and apply to the soil. Keep in mind that the scales that die on the fronds often DO NOT fall off. So you may need to just have to look for the presence of new ones forming.
There may be some other products such as horticultural oils. Best to visit with your garden center about the most appropriate materials.
Good Luck.
